Entrepreneur Spotlight: Kenny Akinwale | Owner of Detroit Seafood Market

“You constantly have to move, constantly have to reinvent yourself, constantly have to challenge yourself—it’s easy to get comfortable.”

These words of wisdom come from local Detroit businessman and entrepreneur Kenny Akinwale, CEO of Detroit Seafood Market, a fine-dining restaurant in downtown Detroit. Starting out as a short-order cook in ’83 at Roy Rogers, he challenged his manager by saying he could do a better job than the current assistant manager. Taking him up on his offer, Mr. Akinwale was able to rise through the ranks of restaurant management blazingly quick taking up several positions at Pizza Hut and even working in their corporate offices.

Eventually, Mr. Akinwale got an offer to join Aramark Corporation where he became a Vice President of Operations and oversaw the operations of seven states including Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and New York. While at Aramark, Mr. Akinwale gained experience in both food and facilities that led him to eventually own Detroit Seafood Market and his own construction company.

Always looking for the next opportunity to have an impact on his community, Kenny Akinwale shares with us his business philosophy.
