Career Spotlight: Jelani Aliyu | Automobile Designer

“Whenever I design my vehicles I try to capture that spirit of African wilderness, and I think that’s what translates into these very powerful sports cars.”

Jelani Aliyu is an automobile designer working for the (American cooperation) General Motors. Mr. Aliyu explains that his job as a designer is to forecast, design and manufacture automobiles that will be competitive and marketable. He has worked on a number of vehicles including the Buick Rendezvous, Opel Astra in Germany, the Pontiac G6, Chevrolet Volt, 2014 Chevrolet Camaro, 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, and the car that became Bumblebee in the box office blockbuster movie, Transformers 4: Age of Extinction.

At the age of seven, this Nigerian-born designer loved to draw and loved cars. Inspired by visuals in books and magazines that were brought back home to Nigeria whenever his parents or older siblings traveled out of the country, he was exposed to the possibilities out in the world. Mr. Aliyu strongly believes that the youth of Nigeria need to be part of designing the cars that are driven in Nigeria:

“Not only are [the Nigerian youths] the future of the country, they are an integral part of today’s Nigeria, so I hope they see that you can dedicate your energy and you can commit yourself to success and that nothing is impossible.”

He explains that it is important for Nigerians to work for international companies that produce and design cars for Nigeria so they can best understand the needs and challenges of Nigeria’s transportation system.
